During this year’s MoMM conference in Vienna, Prof. Leon S.L.Wang, Prof. i-Hsien Ting und Prof. Wen-Yang Lin (National University of Kaohsiung, Taiwan) as well as Prof. Hung-Yu Kao (National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan) visited SBA Research. During the site visit future cooperation in the fields of social networking, security and privacy was agreed upon and will start with a first joint seminar in 2014.
On 28/11/2013, during “EPILOG Wintersemester 2013” at the Technical University of Vienna, Adrian Dabrowski was awarded the “Diploma Thesis Award sponsored by IEEE Austria Section” for his thesis “Security Analysis of Metropolitan Locking Systems Using the Example of the City of Vienna”.
Edgar Weippl gave the opening keynote at this year’s SIN conference in Turkey on “Social Engineering Attacks on the Knowledge Worker and the Digital Native”. Together with Bart Preneel and Josef Pieprzyk, Edgar was on a panel discussion organized by Ali Aydin Selcuk.
The awareness of information security and IT compliance has increased considerably in the recent past. SBA Research takes this into account and expands its range of services.

The lecture focuses on the potential of Chebyshev polynomials for privacy-enhancing techniques in data mining. Two protocols are considered: 1) The calculation of the arithmetic mean according to Kiltz, Leander and Malone-Lee (2005). 2) The secure distributed learning of decision trees according to Lindell and Pinkas (2002). The studies show that significant efficiency gains can be achieved in both protocols through the use of Chebyshev polynomials. This is due to the better approximation properties of aborted Chebyshev developments compared to the aborted Taylor series.
Johanna Ullrich received the annualy-presented “Diplomarbeitspreis der Stadt Wien” (Diploma award of the city of Vienna) for her diploma thesis “Header compression of IPsec in powerline networks”. Within this work, she worked on finding the right balance for secure data transmission directly over the power grid which offers just a limited bandwith. The award has been presented within a graduation ceremony on October 18th, 2013 at the Kuppelsaal of the Vienna University of Technology.
The Best Paper Award of this year’s International Conference on Preservation (iPRES 2013) of Digital Objects has been awarded to Stephan Strodl and Rudolf Mayer, researchers at SBA, and their co-authors for their contribution “Digital Preservation of a Process and its Application to e-Science Experiments”. This paper is a direct outcome of their activities in the EU funded FP7 project TIMBUS (http://timbusproject.net/).
The iPRES is an annual scientific conference, and the major gathering of experts in the field of digital preservation, gathering several hundreds of researchers. The iPRES 2013 was held from 2-6 September 2013 in Lisbon, Portugal.
