1st Working Group Meeting on Sustainability & Computer Science @OCG
On December 2, 2025, the OCG Working Group on Sustainability & Computer Science marked the beginning of a new phase of collaboration with an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary kick-off meeting. Chaired by Kevin Mallinger, lead of the CORE Research Group at SBA Research, the meeting focused on the central theme “AI and Farming” – an area where sustainable computing has the potential to create significant impact.

Kevin’s introductory impulse initiated an engaged discussion on future priorities, addressing key questions such as:
- How can fair, transparent, and regionally tailored digital solutions effectively support agricultural processes?
- Which guidelines are needed to communicate the uncertainty and complexity of AI-driven predictions in a clear and practice-oriented manner?
- How can Austria establish a resilient agricultural data infrastructure that fosters innovation while protecting data privacy and ownership rights – through approaches such as federated learning, anonymization, or the use of synthetic data?
A key takeaway from the discussion was that technical capability is not the primary challenge. Instead, the major obstacles lie in real-world applicability, user acceptance, legal and regulatory frameworks, and awareness and understanding of emerging technologies.
