Constanze Roedig

Key Researcher at SBA Research, Founder of the Kubernetes Storm Center initiative and Principal Investigator for European Open Science Cloud “Open Science Labs for High Performance Computing”

Research Interests

Her research interests span from complex systems dynamics — particularly the interplay between cyber systems and human behavior – to supply chain security and cloud runtime security using technologies like eBPF, WebAssembly, and AI.

Bio

Constanze Roedig holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the Albert Einstein Institute, where her main contribution was the detectable eccentricity of binary black hole orbits in gravitational waves and multi-messenger astronomy. After a PostDoc at Johns Hopkins on general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamics, she transitioned to the private sector helping a US bank implement their liquidity risk algorithms. Continuing to serve large financial clients, she joined Deloitte as a Software and Systems Architect in Finance and Risk, where she served a client as Lead Architect to redesign a 30 year legacy Mainframe into a fully cloud-native, event-driven, micro services architecture spanning over 3 continents.

Beginning in 2017, her focus became increasingly drawn to security and how the design of processes, humans, social structures interacts with systems, their boundaries, their interfaces and their UX.

In 2020, she decided to give back to the community and became affiliated with Austrian universities to design, build, teach and conduct research on leveraging cloud-native methods in academia. This led her to found the Austrian Open Cloud Community and the Kubernetes Stormcenter initiative for Open Threat Intelligence in Cloud Native. She also created a successful lecture series “Hands On Cloud Native”, to enable the next generation to build their own tech-startups using her training platform focussed on play and exploration for deeply technical, complex, state of the art concepts.

She actively works on Cloud Security, specifically on improving Supply Chain Security and Runtime Security using modern and emerging technologies such as eBPF and WebAssembly. She is particularly keen on practical and achievable reference implementations for regulations such as EU NIS, EU CRA and EU CSA.

A key belief of hers is that fear and shame must be taken out of the security equation to build truly lasting resilience into systems.

Constanze holds various security certificates e.g. SANS GCPN, plays CTFs, regularly supports the Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) on the KubeCon Committee, is a member of the Security TAG and of Cloud Native Austria and co-organizes the Kubernetes Community Days.
