Andreas Holzinger

Andreas Holzinger

is member of the Scientific Board of SBA Research and Professor for Digital Transformation in Intelligent Agriculture and Forestry at the Institute of Forestry Technology at the BOKU University.

Research Interests

The use of artificial intelligence in areas that affect human life has led to increased demand for trustworthy and controllable AI. Andreas Holzinger pioneered the field of interactive machine learning with the human-in-the-loop concept to promote robustness, traceability, explainability, and thus trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI). He advocates a synergistic approach to human-centered AI to align new technologies with human values, ethical principles, and legal requirements to ensure privacy, security, and protection.

Bio

In 2022, Andreas Holzinger was appointed University Professor for Digital Transformation in Intelligent Agriculture and Forestry. In 2021, he was named Fellow of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) in recognition of his pioneering work in interactive machine learning using the “Human-in-the-Loop” approach and multimodal causability. In 2020, Andreas Holzinger became a member of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). From 2019 to 2022, he served as a Visiting Professor for Explainable Artificial Intelligence at the XAI Lab of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. In 2019, he was elected a full member of Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Sciences, in the Informatics section.

In 2025, he received the Most Influential Paper Award for his work on “Human-in-the-Loop.”
